Eva Hammonds

Eva Mary Hammonds 98, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday morning, September 10, 2018. Eva was born on May 5, 1920 in Page, West Virginia. She was the daughter of Mary Carnes and Swann Hamblin and the second of four children. Eva was raised in rural Appalachia in the town of Pennington Gap, Virginia by her Mother and Uncle Charlie, who she loved dearly. Their sayings, lessons, and determination were embraced by Eva and would be used throughout her life to find strength and courage in the face of adversity. Eva’s late siblings Geneweeze Livingston, Rose Hughes and Paul Hamblin were also very endearing in her life. She remained very close to them and would proudly share stories about their childhood experiences. Eva later met John Earl Hammonds from St. Charles, Virginia. They would wed and have a union that lasted 57 years. It would produce three sons: Don, Paul and Wesley. And a fourth son, Adrian. Eva and John Earl were very much in love and always remained faithful to each other. When John Earl fell ill with Alzheimer, Eva cared for him at home until his death. Eva and John Earl moved to Johnson City, Tennessee in 1962. This began the second half of her life. It was here that Eva found a second home. Eva quickly found favor with others. Her kindness and love of community brought her many new friends. Eva began to worship at West Market Street United Methodist Church, where she remained a life long member. She became active in the United Methodist Women and other church organizations. On August 24, 1980, Eva was baptized. Her faith was strong and remained that way throughout her life. She would be known as Mama Hammonds by her church family. Eva loved the Lord. Eva leaned on her faith to courageously battle breast cancer for nearly twenty years. Eva loved life. Eva loved living. Eva loved doing. Eva will be remembered for many things, among them her yellow, caramel pound cake. But her love of Faith, Family, and Friends will never be forgotten. Eva was a Proverbs 31 woman. Eva is survived by her sons Wesley Hammonds (Charnita) and Adrian Hammonds, and her beloved daughter-in-law Cathy Hammonds and loving brother-in-law Clarence Hammonds, grandchildren (Jeffery Williams, Doneta Lake, Jeffery Hammonds, Timothy Hammonds, Katina Wiggins, Eva Hammonds, Katie Hammonds Jones, Sean McCrae, Paul Hammonds, and Westin Hammonds), Great grandchild Adiah Ette and great grandchildren, special nieces (Alice, Sandy & Brenda) other great nieces, special nephews (Phillip & Douglas), great nephews, cousins and many friends. The family would like to express appreciation to the Regional Cancer Center for providing Eva with excellent care, with special thanks to Doctor Koyamangalath Krishnan and nurse Jill Rawles. Also, that to Elizabeth Lawson, MD. The Home Going and Celebration of Life Service for Eva Hammonds will be held at Otterbein United Methodist Church, 120 East Chilhowie Ave, Johnson City, TN. on Saturday, September 15, at 6pm. Family will receive friends from 5pm and anytime at the home. Eva will be laid to rest beside her late husband, John Earl in West Lawn Cemetery on Sunday Morning, September 16, at 10am.
