Lavelma Peachie Smith Owens better known as ”Mrs. Peachie”, 87, died peacefully surrounded by family on February 19th 2017 at Cornerstone Nursing Home, in Johnson City, TN Peachie Ownes is survived by her daughter Debra Jean Carson, her son in law Harold Carson Sr., her grandson Derrick J. Carson, grandson Jeremy D. Carson, her great grandchildren Myah, Gabriel, Gianna Carson and step grandchild Kayla Carson. Peachie is also survived by a brother Alan Smith of Columbus, Indiana and his wife Elaine and their 2 sons and 1 daughter, as well as a sister Nancy Humes and her son also of Columbus, Indiana. On her married side Peachie is survived by sisters in law Nuellen Wagner of Maryland, Thelma Flemming of Florida, Rita Bradley of Johnson City. Peachie is also survived by her non blood sister Bibi “The queen of east eighth” and several nieces and nephews She is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years Charles D. Owens, sisters Irene Smith Humes, Frances Smith ; Prince Smith, and her brothers Louis, Shirley, Buddy, and Robert (Bob) Smith. Lavelma Peachie Owens was born on August 23rd 1929 in Johnson City, TN to parents William R. Smith and Roxy Love Smith. She graduated from Langston High School 1947 where she was well known for being an exciting baton twirling drum majorette. Sometime after Langston Peachie started a family and accepted a position in the dietary department of what is now Mountain States Hospital where she worked for more than 42 years. For anyone who knew her Peachie couldn’t sit still. She was constantly cleaning and singing. If you were a guest in her home or anywhere for that matter and you were family, she was serving you. She was always concerned about those around her. Peachie loved to cook for the family. She could take a few dollars and turn it into a feast. She would always offer you cook you something to eat. She couldn’t stand the thought that someone was hungry. She would offer to pull the entire refrigerator out for a mid-day snack. You definitely couldn’t lose weight around Peachie. Peachie would get a garden hoe out of the shed and weed the entire flower beds and gardens one weed at a time. She would say, “I don’t have much but I take good care of what I do have”. She would take it upon herself to buy paint and brushes and touch up things once they couldn’t be cleaned anymore. If she ran out of things to do she would come and clean for you. If you’ve ever met an angel on earth Peachie was it. Anyone who encountered her would say no different. I Love Peachie A funeral is scheduled for Lavelma Peachie Owens on Saturday February 25, 2017 at Friendship Baptist Church at 1:00pm. The family will receive friends from 12:00pm until 1:00pm prior to the services.Burial will follow at Washington County Memorial Gardens. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Peachie’s life.
