Phyllis June Goines Hall

Phyllis June Goines Hall was born August 28 1947, in Johnson City, Tennessee. She was the fifth child of twelve children born to the matrimonial union of Claude F. and Virginia Sanders Goines. Following a lengthy illness, Phyllis departed this life on November 24, 2017. Her father, Claude, a sister, Priscilla, two brothers, Billy and Robert Goines, a brother-in-law, Michael Whittington and a nephew, Michael G. Whittington preceded her in death. She attended Dunbar Elementary school and was a member of the last graduating class of Langston High School where she excelled in her academic studies. Phyllis was active in numerous extra-curricular activities and programs. These included being a member of the student council, a member of the chorus, captain of the football cheering squad, a member of the “Office Girls Corp.” and a superb basketball player. Following graduation, she served dutifully for many years on the Langston High School Reunion Committee. From an early age, Phyllis was a member of Friendship Baptist Church where she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She sang in the choir, served as an usher for numerous years and was president of the “Junior Church.” Phyllis’ church and spiritual experience served as the framework for her adult life. She was always courteous and helpful to others. Her respectful and cooperative attitude was appreciated by countless people. Phyllis was a fun loving person who enjoyed spending quality time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed a long and successful career with the Kennametal Corporation where she worked as a “Press Operator” and “Sharper”. Phyllis retired after serving over 32 years of dedicated and loyal service with the Company. She was respected and appreciated by both fellow workers and members of leadership. As a family member, Phyllis was loved and adored by everyone, especially her many nieces and nephews. She would often help with the care of her sibling’s children which included buying them gifts and taking them to entertainment venues. Always one to have fun, Phyllis enjoyed bowling, traveling, family gatherings and various other social activities. Family and friends were very important to Phyllis, as evidenced by her love of life and willingness to help others. Phyllis leaves to cherish her memory: her lovely mother Virginia Sanders Goines, an uncle, Paul (Joyce) Goines; two brothers, Claude (Honey) and Martin Douglas; six sisters, Nancy (Norman) Howard; Loretta Goines; Georgia (Eugene) Gillespie; Claudia Goines; Carrie Whittington; Pamela (Ronny) Bolden; two sister-in-law’s Pat Goines and Gail Goines; and, a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; in addition to many friends who were close to her heart. The family will receive friends and expressions of condolence at her mother’s home located at 313 Peach Blossom, Johnson City. Funeral services will be held at Friendship Baptist Church, 522 West Main St., Johnson City, on Monday, November 27th. The family hour will begin at 11 a.m. with the Funeral service starting at 12 noon.
